Shopify GA4 Not Tracking Purchases: Why It Happens and How to Fix It
Quick fix
Shopify GA4 not tracking purchases usually means the GA4 tag isn't set up through the Google & YouTube channel, or the store is in private mode. An unmigrated tag is converted to a custom pixel, which can lose data and break enhanced measurement and Tag Assistant. Migrate the tag to the channel, turn off private mode, and check consent.
- Check a GA4 property and web data stream exist.
- Check the GA4 tag comes from the Google & YouTube channel.
- Check the store is not in private mode.
- Check consent is integrated with the Customer Privacy API.

What this error means
On Shopify, GA4 tracks purchases through tags added by the Google & YouTube channel, which then collect ecommerce events automatically. If the tag is missing, converted to a custom pixel, or blocked by private mode or consent, purchases won't reach GA4.
Why it happens
1GA4 not set up through the channel
The tag should be added with the Google & YouTube channel.
How to tell if this is you: There is no Google channel or tag.
2Store in private mode
GA cannot track events in private mode.
How to tell if this is you: The online store is password protected.
3The tag was converted to a custom pixel
Conversion keeps some measurement but degrades it.
How to tell if this is you: The tag appears under Customer events.
4Consent treatment changed
Consent behaviour may differ after migration.
How to tell if this is you: Data dropped after the migration.
How to fix it
Set up GA4 properly
For: GA4 not set up through the channel
- Create the GA4 property and web data stream.
- Install the Google & YouTube channel and add the tags.
- Link Analytics to Google Ads.
Migrate the tag
For: The tag was converted to a custom pixel, Consent treatment changed
- Migrate the Google Analytics pixel to the Google & YouTube channel.
- Integrate your consent banner with the Customer Privacy API and audit it.
How long it takes
Shopify doesn't publish a timeline for this.
How to stop it happening again
- Use the channel for GA4 rather than manual tags.
- Audit the consent banner after any migration.
- Keep the store out of private mode when you need tracking.
From my desk
Often GA4 was added by hand years ago and later converted into a custom pixel, and it has been losing features since. I check the tag comes from the Google and YouTube channel, that the store isn't in private mode, and that consent is wired up. Then I place a test order and watch for the purchase event.
