GA4 Key Events Not Showing: Causes and Fixes
Quick fix
GA4 key events not showing is usually a timing or permissions issue. Marking an event as a key event only affects data from that moment, and it can take up to 24 hours to appear in standard reports, though Realtime updates in minutes. You also need marketer access or above.
- Check the event exists under Admin, Data display, Events.
- Mark it with the star icon, or create it with the toggle.
- Check your role allows marking key events.
- Wait up to 24 hours for standard reports.

What this error means
A key event is an event you mark as important to your business, like a lead or purchase. Marking only affects data from that point on, and standard reports take time to show it.
Why it happens
1Standard reports have not updated yet
Allow up to 24 hours, though Realtime is faster.
How to tell if this is you: Realtime shows the event but standard reports do not.
2Expecting past data
Marking affects reports from creation and does not change historic data.
How to tell if this is you: Earlier dates show no key events.
3Not enough access
You need marketer access or above.
How to tell if this is you: The star icon or toggle is unavailable.
4The event has not fired yet
New events may not appear until they are received.
How to tell if this is you: The event is missing from Recent events.
5At the key event limit
Standard properties allow up to 30 key events.
How to tell if this is you: You already have many key events.
How to fix it
Mark the event
For: Not enough access, The event has not fired yet
- Go to Admin, then Data display, then Events.
- Click the star icon beside an existing event.
- For a new event, create it and switch on the Mark as key event toggle.
Allow for timing
For: Standard reports have not updated yet, Expecting past data
- Check Realtime for a quick answer within minutes.
- Wait up to 24 hours for standard reports.
Stay within the limit
- Remove key events you no longer need, remembering past data stays as it was.
How long it takes
Google says to allow up to 24 hours for a key event to show in standard reports, while Realtime updates a few minutes after the event.
How to stop it happening again
- Mark key events before launch so data is counted from day one.
- Keep track of how many key events you use.
- Remember default key events such as purchase.
From my desk
I first check the event is actually firing, then that it's marked as a key event, then how long ago that happened. Standard reports can take up to a day to catch up, and marking an event doesn't rewrite history. I also check the property's role permissions, because the toggle simply won't be available to some users.
