What this error means
GA4 only records pages that carry a correctly set up Google tag. No data usually means the tag is missing, the ID is wrong, or a Tag Manager change was never published. On a new install, processing can also take a while.
Why it happens
1The tag is not installed on every page
Analytics only collects data from pages that include the snippet.
How to tell if this is you: Some pages show data and others never do.
2Snippet in the wrong place
The Google tag belongs after the opening head tag, and Tag Manager snippets have fixed places.
How to tell if this is you: The snippet is in the body or at the page foot.
3Wrong Measurement ID or damaged code
The ID must match the stream, and copying through a word processor can change the code.
How to tell if this is you: The ID in the tag differs from Stream details.
4Tag Manager not finished
The GA4 Configuration tag needs configuring, a trigger and publishing.
How to tell if this is you: Preview works but the live site sends nothing.
5Both Google tag and Tag Manager installed
Using both can overcount data.
How to tell if this is you: Two sets of snippets are on the page.
6Too early or too little traffic
A new install can take up to 24 hours, and low traffic may trigger thresholds.
How to tell if this is you: You installed recently or have few visitors.
How to fix it
Check the installation
For: The tag is not installed on every page, Snippet in the wrong place, Wrong Measurement ID or damaged code
- Go to Admin, then Data Streams, and copy the Measurement ID.
- Make sure the same ID is in the tag, on every page.
- Paste the snippet from a text editor, not a word processor.
Finish the Tag Manager setup
For: Tag Manager not finished, Both Google tag and Tag Manager installed
- Configure the GA4 Configuration tag with a page-load trigger.
- Remove one of the two installation methods.
- Click Submit to publish.
Test and wait
For: Too early or too little traffic
- Click around the site and check the Realtime report after about a minute.
- Allow up to 24 hours for a new installation.
How long it takes
Google says a first installation needs up to 24 hours before data is processed, though Realtime should show your own clicks within about a minute.
How to stop it happening again
- Use only one installation method.
- Check the Measurement ID after any site rebuild.
- Always publish the Tag Manager container after changes.
From my desk
I open the site, view the page source or Tag Assistant, and check the tag is there with the right Measurement ID. A wrong ID or a snippet pasted into the wrong place causes most blank properties. If the tag is fine, I check whether Tag Manager was published, then wait for processing before worrying.
