Link Google Ads to GA4 Not Working? 4 Causes and How to Fix Them

Last checked against Google's documentation. By Muhammed Abdul Kalam. Data loss

Quick fix

Link Google Ads to GA4 not working? Check four things: the link exists with the right permissions, auto-tagging is on, 48 hours have passed since linking, and the GCLID parameter survives your site's redirects. Test the last by adding ?gclid=TesTER-123 to a landing page URL.

  • In GA4 Admin, open Google Ads links under Product links and check the account is listed.
  • Check auto-tagging is on in Google Ads.
  • Check at least 48 hours have passed since linking.
  • Add ?gclid=TesTER-123 to a landing page URL and check it survives.

What this error means

GA4 only shows Google Ads data when the two accounts are linked and each ad click carries a GCLID that reaches your site intact. Auto-tagging adds the GCLID; if the link is missing, too new, or a redirect strips the GCLID, GA4 has no Google Ads data.

Google lists four common causes: accounts not linked, less than 48 hours since linking, auto-tagging not enabled, and the GCLID lost in redirects.

Why it happens

1The accounts aren't linked, or you lack permissions

Linking needs administrative access in Google Ads and Edit permission on the GA4 property.

How to tell if this is you: Your Google Ads account isn't listed under Google Ads links in GA4.

2The link is less than 48 hours old

Google Ads data can take 48 hours to show up in Analytics.

How to tell if this is you: The Date linked column shows less than 48 hours ago.

3Auto-tagging is off

Without auto-tagging, clicks don't carry a GCLID, and GA4 can't connect sessions to Google Ads. Some sites serve an error page when it's on.

How to tell if this is you: Clicking your ad doesn't add gclid= to the landing page URL.

4Redirects strip the GCLID

A redirect on your site drops or changes the GCLID parameter before GA4 records the visit.

How to tell if this is you: The ?gclid=TesTER-123 test parameter disappears or changes when the page loads.

How to fix it

Create or check the link

For: The accounts aren't linked, or you lack permissions

  1. In Google Ads, open Data manager.Tools then Data manager
  2. Click + Connect Product, then Google Analytics (GA4) & Firebase.
  3. Select the GA4 property, click Next, review and link.

Fix auto-tagging and redirects

For: Auto-tagging is off, Redirects strip the GCLID

  1. Turn auto-tagging on. If your site then shows an error, ask your developer to allow arbitrary URL parameters.
  2. Copy a landing page URL, add ?gclid=TesTER-123 and load it.
  3. If the parameter is changed or removed, change the website setting or use manual tagging.

How long it takes

It can take 48 hours for Google Ads data to appear in Analytics after linking. Importing GA4 metrics into Google Ads usually takes less than an hour, longer for larger accounts.

How to stop it happening again

  • Keep auto-tagging on; GA4 prioritises it over manual tagging.
  • Retest the GCLID after any redirect or site change.
  • If a manager account owns the link, keep it linked, or new data stops.

From my desk

Permissions on both sides come first, edit access in GA4 and admin access in Google Ads. Then I confirm the right property is linked and that data sharing and auto-tagging are on. A link made under a different login is easy to miss.
