Google Ads Conversions Attributed to Wrong Campaign? 4 Causes and Fixes

Last checked against Google's documentation. By Muhammed Abdul Kalam. Wasted spend

Quick fix

Google Ads conversions attributed to wrong campaign are usually reporting choices, not errors. Data-driven attribution splits credit between ads, Google reports conversions on the click date, and campaign-specific goals change which actions each campaign counts. Check the attribution model, the date basis and the goal settings first.

  • Check the attribution model on the conversion action.
  • Compare using All conv. (by conv. time) instead of click date.
  • Check which campaigns use campaign-specific goals.

What this error means

Which campaign gets a conversion depends on settings: the attribution model decides how credit is shared between ad clicks, Google reports conversions on the date of the click, and goals decide which conversion actions each campaign counts. So a conversion can look like it landed in the wrong place when it is following those settings.

Google's default for most conversion actions is data-driven attribution, which distributes credit using your account's past data.

Why it happens

1The attribution model shares credit

Data-driven attribution, the default, distributes credit across the ads someone clicked, which also produces fractional conversions. Last click gives all credit to the last ad clicked, often a brand search.

How to tell if this is you: You see decimal conversions, or credit shifts when you compare models.

2Conversions are reported on the click date

Google Ads attributes conversions to the date of the click, so a conversion can appear on an earlier date than in your CRM or analytics.

How to tell if this is you: Totals match over a month but not day by day.

3Goal settings differ by campaign

Campaign-specific goals override account-default goals for those campaigns. If you remove every action from a campaign goal, the campaign reverts to account-default goals.

How to tell if this is you: One campaign counts actions others don't.

4You are comparing different columns

Conversions counts primary actions only. All conversions adds secondary actions and view-through conversions. In-app conversions may also be credited to App campaigns.

How to tell if this is you: The numbers you're comparing come from Conversions in one report and All conversions in another.

How to fix it

Line up the comparison

For: Conversions are reported on the click date, You are comparing different columns

  1. When comparing with other systems, use All conv. (by conv. time).
  2. Compare Conversions with Conversions, and All conversions with All conversions.

Review models and goals

For: The attribution model shares credit, Goal settings differ by campaign

  1. Check each action's attribution model. Only data-driven and last click remain; the other models are no longer supported.
  2. Review campaign-specific goals. Google recommends account-default goals across campaigns where possible.
  3. Make goal changes rarely: frequent changes reset the 7-14 day learning period.

How long it takes

Google doesn't publish a timeline for this.

How to stop it happening again

  • Document which goals each campaign uses.
  • Report to stakeholders by conversion time when comparing with sales data.
  • Avoid frequent goal changes.

From my desk

Attribution model and settings come first, whether auto-tagging is on, and whether the click ID survives redirects on the landing page. Then I compare Google Ads against the analytics source before telling the client anything looks wrong. Different counting rules often explain the gap.

  • Several goals and attribution settings have been changed over time and nobody knows the current state.

FAQs

Why does my brand campaign get all the conversions?

With last click attribution, all credit goes to the last ad clicked, often a brand search. Data-driven attribution shares credit across the ads that contributed.

Why are my Google Ads conversions in decimals?

Fractional conversions are expected with data-driven attribution, which splits credit between ad interactions.

Why do conversions appear on the wrong date?

Google Ads attributes conversions to the date of the click, not the date of the conversion.

What is the difference between Conversions and All conversions?

Conversions counts primary actions and is used for bidding. All conversions adds secondary actions and view-through conversions.

Which attribution models can I still use?

Data-driven and last click. First click, linear, time decay and position-based are no longer supported.
