Google Ads Conversion Tag Inactive: What It Means and How to Fix It

Last checked against Google's documentation. By Muhammed Abdul Kalam. Data loss

Quick fix

Google Ads conversion tag inactive means no conversions attributed to ad clicks were recorded for that action in the last 7-14 days. It isn't always a broken tag. Check the tag fires using Tag Assistant; if it does, make sure campaigns are active and sending traffic to the conversion page.

  • Hover over the Tag inactive status and select Troubleshoot.
  • Check campaigns are active and sending traffic to the conversion page.
  • Do a test conversion that starts with a click on one of your ads.

What this error means

The status describes recent data, not the tag itself. Tag inactive (or No recent conversions) means Google Ads hasn't recorded any ad-attributed conversions for the action in the last 7-14 days. Unverified is different: it means the tag has never fired.

Google's explanation: if your tags fire correctly, Tag inactive is likely down to a lack of recent conversions, not a technical tag problem.

What Google shows

Tag inactive

Why it happens

1No one has converted from an ad recently

If your tags fire correctly, the status is likely due to a lack of recent conversions rather than a tag problem.

How to tell if this is you: Tag Assistant confirms the tag fires, but ad traffic is low or campaigns are paused.

2The tag stopped firing

The Google tag was removed from some pages, or didn't follow you to a new domain or thank-you page.

How to tell if this is you: Tag Assistant can't find the tag or the conversion on your site.

3It has never fired (Unverified)

Unverified means the tag has not yet fired. If you've waited long enough for conversions and it stays Unverified, the tag setup has a problem.

How to tell if this is you: The status reads Unverified rather than Tag inactive.

How to fix it

Check the tag with Tag Assistant

  1. Open the conversions summary.Goals then Summary
  2. Hover over the status and select Troubleshoot to open Tag Assistant.
  3. Enter a landing page or home page URL, then click through to the conversion.
  4. Make sure the Google tag is on every page, including new domains and thank-you pages.

If the tag fires correctly

For: No one has converted from an ad recently

  1. Make sure your campaigns are active and drive traffic to the relevant conversion pages.
  2. Perform a test conversion: click one of your ads, then complete the conversion on your site.
  3. Then wait for real conversions; the status updates once one is recorded.

How long it takes

About 30 minutes after a Tag Assistant session, verified actions update in Google Ads and show No recent conversions until a real conversion arrives, when they change to Recording. If you get many conversions an hour, an Unverified status updates within 10 minutes.

How to stop it happening again

  • Recheck the tag after site changes or a domain move.
  • Don't treat Tag inactive on a low-traffic action as an emergency; check traffic first.
  • Remove conversion actions you no longer use; Google removes actions with no data in 13 months anyway.

From my desk

No ratio comes to mind. When an account has had no conversions for a while, I check the tag in Tag Assistant before assuming it is broken. If it fires properly, the status is about volume, not tracking. If I cannot see it fire, it is a real tag problem.

  • The tag is installed through a platform, theme or tag manager setup you did not build and cannot safely change.
  • You've followed the steps and the status still won't change.
