Shopify Additional Scripts Not Working: Why Thank You Page Tracking Stopped

Last checked against Shopify's documentation. By Muhammed Abdul Kalam. Data loss

Quick fix

Shopify additional scripts not working is mostly because Shopify retired them. Checkout.liquid and Additional scripts were sunset for the Thank you and Order status pages on August 28, 2025, and script tags end for non-Plus stores on August 26, 2026. Migrate each pixel to a Shopify app pixel or custom pixel, or use the Meta and Google channels.

  • List the pixels in theme.liquid, Additional scripts and Preferences.
  • Migrate Meta and Google pixels to their sales channels.
  • Move other pixels to app pixels or custom pixels.
  • Check consent is integrated with the Customer Privacy API.

What this error means

Shopify has removed the old way of adding tracking code to the Thank you and Order status pages. Scripts placed there no longer run, so purchase tracking can stop until the pixels are moved to the supported pixel tools.

Why it happens

1Additional scripts and checkout.liquid were sunset

They no longer run on the Thank you and Order status pages.

How to tell if this is you: Purchase tracking stopped around the sunset dates.

2Pixels removed from Preferences

Meta and Universal Analytics tags not set up through the apps were removed and converted.

How to tell if this is you: The pixel is no longer in Preferences.

3Extra Google Analytics settings dropped

Settings in the old JavaScript section are dropped.

How to tell if this is you: Custom GA settings stopped applying.

How to fix it

Move the pixels

For: Additional scripts and checkout.liquid were sunset, Pixels removed from Preferences

  1. Migrate Meta and Google pixels to their channels.
  2. Migrate other pixels to app pixels or custom pixels.
  3. Pick a quiet period to avoid duplicate or missing events.

Rebuild lost settings

For: Extra Google Analytics settings dropped

  1. Re-create needed Google Analytics settings in the supported setup.
  2. Integrate your consent banner with the Customer Privacy API.

How long it takes

Shopify says checkout.liquid and additional scripts were sunset on the Thank you and Order status pages on August 28, 2025, and script tags end for non-Plus stores on August 26, 2026.

How to stop it happening again

  • Keep tracking in pixels managed by Shopify rather than raw scripts.
  • Audit where tracking code lives after any theme or checkout change.
  • Test purchase events after every migration.

From my desk

Quite a few stores I look at still carry old tracking pasted into additional scripts or the checkout layout. I list every place a pixel lives, then migrate Meta and Google through their Shopify channels and the rest through app or custom pixels. I do it in a quiet period and test a real order afterward.
