Shopify Meta Pixel Not Working: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

Last checked against Shopify's documentation. By Muhammed Abdul Kalam. Data loss

Quick fix

Shopify meta pixel not working usually comes down to setup. In Facebook and Instagram, switch on customer data sharing and choose a level, remove any Meta pixel code left in the theme, and check consent. Standard sharing can be blocked by ad blockers, so Enhanced adds the Conversions API. A new pixel also needs customer activity before data shows.

  • Check data sharing is enabled and a level is chosen.
  • Remove old Meta pixel code from the theme.
  • Check consent and ad blockers when testing.
  • Confirm events in Ads Manager after customer activity.

What this error means

The Facebook and Instagram channel adds the Meta pixel to your store once data sharing is on. If it isn't enabled, the pixel is duplicated by old theme code, or consent or an ad blocker stops it, Meta receives little or wrong data.

Why it happens

1Data sharing is off

A Meta pixel needs a customer data-sharing level set.

How to tell if this is you: The pixel list is empty in the channel settings.

2An old pixel is still in the theme

Two pixels can give duplicate or incorrect data.

How to tell if this is you: The pixel code is also in the theme code.

3Ad blockers or consent

Standard sharing relies on the browser, and consent settings can hold the pixel back.

How to tell if this is you: It works in a clean browser.

4Not enough activity yet

A new pixel needs customer activity before data shows.

How to tell if this is you: The pixel is new.

How to fix it

Enable data sharing

For: Data sharing is off

  1. Go to Sales channels, then Facebook and Instagram, then Settings.
  2. Switch on data sharing and choose a level.

Remove duplicates

For: An old pixel is still in the theme

  1. Remove any Meta pixel code you added to the theme.
  2. Check agencies and apps are not adding another pixel.

Work around blockers

For: Ad blockers or consent

  1. Use Enhanced sharing so the Conversions API sends purchases from the server.
  2. Give consent in the cookie banner, or clear cookies to reset it.

Check the result

For: Not enough activity yet

  1. Confirm events in Facebook Ads Manager once customers have been active.

How long it takes

Shopify doesn't publish a timeline for this.

How to stop it happening again

  • Set up the pixel through the channel rather than theme code.
  • Check for duplicates whenever an agency or app is added.
  • Use Enhanced sharing to reduce loss from ad blockers.

From my desk

I look for the pixel in two places: the Facebook and Instagram channel settings, and the theme code. A missing data sharing level or a leftover manual pixel is behind most problems. If both are fine, I test with a clean browser and consent given, then check Events Manager once real customers have been through.

When to get help

  • You've worked through the checks and the data still isn't right.
  • The tracking was set up by an agency, app or developer who is no longer available.
  • Sales or ad spend are affected and every day without clean data costs money.

FAQs

Do I need a data-sharing level?

Yes. A Meta pixel needs a customer data-sharing level to be chosen.

Should I keep pixel code in my theme?

No. Remove it after setting up the pixel through the channel, or you may have two pixels.

Can ad blockers stop the pixel?

On Standard sharing, yes. A browser-based ad blocker can prevent the pixel sharing data.

What does Enhanced add?

The Conversions API alongside the pixel, which sends data server to server so browser ad blockers can't block it.

Why is Ads Manager empty?

A recently added pixel needs customer activity before data is displayed.
