Shopify UTM Parameters Not Tracking: Why Campaigns Do Not Show and How to Fix It
Quick fix
Shopify utm parameters not tracking usually means the links aren't tagged as Shopify expects or the report view hides them. Traffic with utm_campaign in the URL is attributed to marketing, and channel reports rely on UTM parameters plus connected apps. Check your tags, the attribution model and the date range, and look for cost metrics in the ad platform.
- Check the landing page URL really contains utm_campaign.
- Check the attribution model and date range in the report.
- Look in the Top channel performance and Campaigns reports.
- Check ad cost metrics in the ad platform.

What this error means
Shopify attributes sessions and sales to marketing when the visit's URL carries UTM parameters such as utm_campaign, or when a connected app reports the activity. If the tags are missing or the report settings differ, a campaign can seem absent.
Why it happens
1Links missing UTM parameters
Traffic needs utm_campaign in the URL to be attributed to marketing.
How to tell if this is you: The landing URL has no utm_campaign.
2A different attribution model
Last click, first click and last non-direct click credit channels differently.
How to tell if this is you: Totals change when the model changes.
3Date range or session rules
The default view is the last 30 days, and sessions end after 30 minutes apart.
How to tell if this is you: Recent campaigns fall outside the range.
4Cost metrics are not in Shopify
Facebook and Google campaigns don't show cost, ROAS, CPA or CTR.
How to tell if this is you: Cost columns are empty.
5Consent-limited data
A cookie banner means less data is collected.
How to tell if this is you: Sessions fell after a banner.
How to fix it
Check the report settings
For: A different attribution model, Date range or session rules
- Set the attribution model and date range to match the campaign.
- Check both Top channel performance and Campaigns reports.
Get cost data elsewhere
For: Cost metrics are not in Shopify, Consent-limited data
- Check cost, ROAS and CPA in the ad platform.
How long it takes
Shopify doesn't publish a timeline for this.
How to stop it happening again
- Use consistent UTM tagging on every campaign link.
- Choose one attribution model for reporting.
- Use the ad platform for cost metrics.
From my desk
The usual damage is inconsistent tagging. One campaign says Facebook, another says facebook, and some links have a source but no campaign. Shopify's reports need utm_campaign to count a visit as marketing, so I standardise names, check the landing URL keeps its parameters, and compare using the same attribution model.
