Shopify Analytics Different From Google Analytics: Why Numbers Do Not Match

Last checked against Shopify's documentation. By Muhammed Abdul Kalam. Visibility

Quick fix

Shopify analytics different from google analytics is expected. They count reloads, bots, sessions and visitors differently, GA only sees visitors with JavaScript and cookies, extensions can block it, and time zones can differ. Consent banners cut GA data further, and Shopify's session measurement update rolled out September 21 to 23, 2026. Compare trends, not exact totals.

  • Compare the same date range and time zone in both tools.
  • Check for a cookie banner or tracking blockers.
  • Check for data disruption alert icons in Shopify reports.
  • Compare trends rather than exact totals.

What this error means

Shopify sees your orders from its own system, while Google Analytics counts what a visitor's browser reports. Because the tools count differently and GA depends on cookies and scripts, small to moderate gaps are normal and don't mean either is broken.

Why it happens

1Different counting rules

Reloads, sessions and bots are counted differently.

How to tell if this is you: Pageviews and sessions differ most.

2Blocked or consent-limited tracking

GA needs JavaScript and cookies, and can be blocked by extensions or consent.

How to tell if this is you: GA shows fewer visitors than Shopify.

3Time zones

Different reporting time zones shift daily totals.

How to tell if this is you: Daily numbers differ but weekly totals are close.

4A Shopify measurement update

Session-based metrics may change after the rollout.

How to tell if this is you: The change starts around the rollout dates.

5Deleted records

Deleting orders, customers or products removes data from reports.

How to tell if this is you: Old totals shrank.

How to fix it

Align the comparison

For: Time zones, Different counting rules

  1. Compare the same dates and time zone in both tools.
  2. Expect differences in counting, and compare trends.

Account for blocked tracking

For: Blocked or consent-limited tracking

  1. Expect GA to miss visitors who block cookies, JavaScript or the tag.
  2. Remember cookie banners reduce data in consent regions.

Check alerts and updates

For: A Shopify measurement update, Deleted records

  1. Look for the data disruption icon on affected reports.
  2. Note the session measurement update dates when comparing.

How long it takes

Shopify says the Analytics session measurement rollout runs from September 21 to 23, 2026, after which sessions and conversion rate may look different.

How to stop it happening again

  • Pick one tool as the source of truth for orders and revenue.
  • Annotate reports when settings or banners change.
  • Don't delete records you need in reports.

From my desk

I don't expect them to match exactly. Shopify counts orders from its own system, while GA4 only sees visitors whose browser lets the tag run. I'm relaxed about small gaps and watch the trend. I start worrying when the gap suddenly changes, because that points to a broken tag, a consent change or a checkout update.

FAQs

Why are my numbers different?

Browsers, privacy settings and connections make exact numbers hard, and the tools do not use identical tracking.

Why does GA show fewer visitors?

Google can only count visitors with JavaScript and cookies, and extensions can block it.

Do time zones matter?

Yes, different reporting time zones can introduce discrepancies.

What changed in September 2026?

Shopify rolled out a session measurement update from September 21 to 23, so session-based metrics may differ.

What does the alert icon mean?

Data may be delayed or incomplete, so be cautious with it.
