GA4 Not Set in Reports: What (not set) Means and How to Reduce It

Last checked against Google's documentation. By Muhammed Abdul Kalam. Visibility

Quick fix

GA4 not set in reports means Analytics didn't receive a value for that dimension. For ad reports, check Google Ads is linked and auto-tagging is on. For campaign links, check UTM source and medium are complete. For session source and medium, set the Google tag trigger in Tag Manager to Initialization - All pages so session_start isn't missed.

  • Check Google Ads is linked to the property.
  • Check auto-tagging is on, or that UTM tags are complete.
  • In Tag Manager, check the Google tag uses an Initialization trigger.
  • Use URL builders for any manually tagged links.

What this error means

(not set) is Analytics' placeholder when it has no value for a dimension. Unlike some other missing values, it usually points to something you can fix: a missing link, tagging, or the timing of the tag.

Why it happens

1Google Ads not linked or auto-tagging off

Without the link, traffic cannot be mapped to a click.

How to tell if this is you: (not set) appears in advertising reports.

2Incomplete UTM parameters

Manually tagged URLs need complete, correct parameters.

How to tell if this is you: Only some campaigns show (not set).

3Config tag fires too late

A missing session_start event leaves source and medium unset.

How to tell if this is you: Session source / medium shows (not set).

How to fix it

Fix the Google Ads setup

For: Google Ads not linked or auto-tagging off

  1. Link Google Ads and the Analytics property.
  2. Turn on auto-tagging.

Fix manual tagging

For: Incomplete UTM parameters

  1. Use Analytics URL builders to add complete UTM parameters.

Fix the trigger

For: Config tag fires too late

  1. Set the Google tag trigger to Initialization - All pages.

How long it takes

Google doesn't publish a timeline for this.

How to stop it happening again

  • Standardise UTM naming and use URL builders.
  • Keep Google Ads linked and auto-tagging on.
  • Review the trigger type whenever the Google tag changes.

From my desk

Most of it traces to the setup, not to Google. Google Ads isn't linked or auto-tagging is off, campaign links have incomplete UTMs, or the Google tag fires too late so session_start is missed. I work through those three in that order, and I check the trigger type in Tag Manager early.
