Shopify Google Tag Manager Not Working: What to Check
Quick fix
Shopify google tag manager not working is usually down to how GTM runs on Shopify. It has to be a custom pixel, loads in a sandbox with restrictions, and needs customer events pushed to the dataLayer. Tag Assistant's Troubleshoot tag can't see tags inside a custom pixel, so test with the Shopify Pixel Helper, and check consent settings too.
- Check GTM is installed as a custom pixel with the right container ID.
- Check customer events are pushed to the dataLayer.
- Test with the Shopify Pixel Helper, not Troubleshoot tag.
- Check customer privacy and consent sync.

What this error means
On Shopify, Tag Manager runs as a custom pixel in a restricted sandbox. It only gets data you push into its dataLayer from Shopify's customer events, and Google's usual debugging tools can't see inside it.
Why it happens
1GTM not set up as a custom pixel
The container code must go into a custom pixel without its HTML tags.
How to tell if this is you: GTM code was pasted into the theme.
2Events not pushed to the dataLayer
Customer events must be subscribed to and pushed to the dataLayer.
How to tell if this is you: GTM loads but triggers never fire.
3Sandbox restrictions
GTM in the sandbox has the same restrictions as any other pixel.
How to tell if this is you: Some tags work elsewhere but not here.
4Debugging with the wrong tool
Tag Assistant cannot see tags in a custom pixel.
How to tell if this is you: Tag Assistant finds nothing.
5Consent or privacy settings
Privacy settings and unsynced consent can stop the pixel loading.
How to tell if this is you: It fires after accepting in some cases.
How to fix it
Install GTM correctly
For: GTM not set up as a custom pixel, Events not pushed to the dataLayer
- Get the GTM Container ID and the head code block.
- Remove the HTML tags and insert the rest into a new custom pixel.
- Subscribe to customer events and push them to GTM's dataLayer.
Test properly
For: Debugging with the wrong tool, Sandbox restrictions
- Use the Shopify Pixel Helper to check events reach the sandbox without errors.
- Use Tag Assistant to see which Google tags load on the page, not Troubleshoot tag.
How long it takes
Shopify doesn't publish a timeline for this.
How to stop it happening again
- Review available apps before building a custom pixel.
- Remember Shopify does not support custom pixels, so document your setup.
- Ensure someone with JavaScript skills owns the pixel.
From my desk
People paste the normal GTM snippet into the theme and expect checkout to work, but on Shopify it runs as a sandboxed custom pixel. Events have to be pushed to the data layer from Shopify's customer events, and Tag Assistant can't troubleshoot inside it. I test with the Shopify Pixel Helper instead.
