Google Ads Suspended: Unacceptable Business Practices and What to Do Now

Last checked against Google's documentation. By Muhammed Abdul Kalam. Blocks all ads

Quick fix

A "Google Ads suspended: unacceptable business practices" notice means Google believes your ads or site could scam people: implying ties to brands or public figures you don't have, offering what you can't deliver, or phishing. Fix your site's identity, branding and claims, gather proof, then appeal from the Contact Us link.

  • Check your site explains who you are, with current contact details.
  • Remove other brands' names, logos and colours, and any misspelt brand names.
  • Check you hold every certification your service needs.
  • Gather proof of any partnership or endorsement you mention.

What this error means

This is the most serious part of Google's Misrepresentation rules. Google believes your ads or website could scam people, for example by hiding who you are, implying a connection you don't have, or offering something you can't deliver. It's an egregious policy, so the whole account was suspended without warning.

Google does not allow scamming people by hiding or misrepresenting information about your business, products or services.

Why it happens

1Implying a connection you don't have

Making it look as if you're affiliated with another brand, organisation or government body, or impersonating a business to get money or personal details.

How to tell if this is you: Your site or ads use another brand's name, logo or look, or call you "official" without a partnership.

2Using a public figure without permission

Pretending to be a public figure, or implying a connection or endorsement that doesn't exist.

How to tell if this is you: Your ads feature a celebrity, influencer or business leader without a signed agreement.

3Offering what you can't deliver

Offering products or services you don't have or can't deliver, including missing licences or qualifications, or misrepresenting services that affect health or safety.

How to tell if this is you: Customers report non-delivery, or your service needs a licence you don't hold.

4Pages that look like phishing

Pages that collect personal information such as passwords or card numbers while looking like a trusted or well-known entity.

How to tell if this is you: Your landing page asks for login or card details and resembles another company.

How to fix it

  1. Add current contact details and a clear explanation of what your company does, for example on an About us page.
  2. Use your own name, logo, images and colours, and never misspell another brand's name in ads.
  3. If you're an authorised partner, ask the brand to mention you on its website. If you aren't, consider a disclaimer.
  4. Hold every certification your service needs, and keep any you list up to date.
  5. Only feature public figures you have documented, provable consent from.
  6. Deliver what customers paid for, to the agreed specification.

How to appeal or request a review

Appeal if you believe there's been an error. Accounts are reinstated only in compelling circumstances, such as a mistake, so be thorough, accurate and honest.

  1. In your Google Ads account, select the Contact Us link in the notification at the top of the screen.
  2. Complete the appeal form that opens on the right side of the screen.
  3. Wait for the email with the outcome. Selecting Contact Us again while the appeal is processing only shows an Appeal pending status.
  4. If the appeal is rejected, you can appeal again the same way.

What to include

  • If you're an official partner, describe the partnership and how you're connected.
  • Attach proof: contracts, written agreements, a credible news article or a public statement confirming the connection.
  • Explain how your business works and anything that changed recently.
  • If the account is new or you recently changed agency, share your past Google Ads history.
  • Complete advertiser verification if asked. After 3 failed attempts you cannot appeal.

What not to do

  • Don't resubmit the same appeal with nothing new. Fix the site first and add proof.

Open Google's review page

How long it takes

Google doesn't publish a review time for suspension appeals. When the appeal has been reviewed, you get an email with the outcome.

How to stop it happening again

  • Keep an accurate About us page with current contact details.
  • Use only your own branding, and disclaim any brand you mention but aren't partnered with.
  • Get documented consent before featuring any public figure.
  • Keep licences and certifications current.

From my desk

No single trigger comes to mind. It usually comes back to what the website or ads say about the business, compared with what is delivered. I read the policy, look at the site as a stranger would, and appeal through Google's own process once it is fixed.

When to get help

  • Your first appeal was rejected and you are not sure what evidence would change the decision.
  • The account carries spend or history the business depends on and you have one chance to get the appeal right.
  • An agency or former employee ran the account and you cannot see what was done in it.
