Google Ads Advertiser Verification Failed: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

Last checked against Google's documentation. By Muhammed Abdul Kalam. Account at risk

Quick fix

Google Ads advertiser verification failed usually means Google couldn't verify your documents: they were blurry, cropped, a screenshot, or the name or address doesn't exactly match what you entered. Read the issue shown in your account, fix that exact problem, then resubmit. Attempts are limited, so check before you upload.

  • Read the issue named in your account, such as a blurred document or a legal name that can't be verified.
  • Check names match the document exactly, character for character.
  • Photograph the original document with all four corners in frame, in focus and without glare.
  • Check the document address and country match your payments profile.

What this error means

Google asked you to prove who you or your business are, and couldn't match what you sent. Usually the problem is the image (blurry, dark, cropped, a copy) or a mismatch between the document and the details in your account. While verification is outstanding, some ads may be restricted.

Google's wording: there was an issue with your task, meaning it couldn't verify your information, usually because of the submitted documents.

Why it happens

1The document image was rejected

Blurry, low-quality, poorly lit or dark images, front-only scans, photocopies and screenshots are all rejected.

How to tell if this is you: The issue reads Document is blurred, missing the back, poorly-lit or self-printed.

2A name doesn't match exactly

The owner's legal name or the organisation name you entered doesn't exactly match the document.

How to tell if this is you: The issue reads Legal name can't be verified or Business information couldn't be verified.

3Address or country doesn't match the payments profile

The document's address or country differs from your payments profile.

How to tell if this is you: The issue reads Address can't be verified or Payments mismatch with submitted documents.

4The document type is not accepted

The document isn't on the accepted list for your country, and digital IDs are never accepted.

How to tell if this is you: The issue reads The document type you submitted is not supported.

5A change triggered reverification

Changing the legal name on your billing profile triggers a new verification straight away.

How to tell if this is you: You recently changed your company name or payments profile.

How to fix it

  1. Read the exact issue in your account for each task.
  2. Photograph the original document with all four corners, in focus, without reflections or glare.
  3. Make the names you enter match the document exactly, or edit them to match.
  4. Use a document whose address and country match your payments profile.
  5. Check answers about your business are current and consistent with your documents.
  6. Resubmit in your Google Ads account.

How to appeal or request a review

If verification issues led to a suspension and you believe it was an error, you can appeal. Only appeal if it was an error, and be ready to explain why.

  1. Click the Fix it link in the notification at the top of your account to open the appeal form.
  2. Wait for the email with the outcome. Selecting Contact Us again while the appeal is processing only shows an Appeal pending status.
  3. If the appeal is rejected, you can appeal again the same way.

What to include

  • Explain why the decision was an error.

What not to do

  • Don't upload anything other than the document requested: that can lead to suspension.
  • Don't submit altered or false documents. False information in verification is an egregious violation and suspends the account.
  • Don't burn attempts on guesses. Attempts are limited, and some suspended advertisers can't appeal after 3 failed verifications.

How long it takes

It can take up to 5 business days for your verification status to update in the account.

How to stop it happening again

  • Keep your legal name identical across documents, payments profile and Google Ads.
  • Expect reverification after you change the legal name on your billing profile.
  • Keep the payments profile address current.

From my desk

Details that do not match the documents are a common slip, such as the business name, address or payment profile differing. The person verifying should also be the right one for that account. I read the failure reason and use Google's own verification help, with genuine documents only.
