Google Ads Suspended: Suspicious Payment Activity and What to Do Now

Last checked against Google's documentation. By Muhammed Abdul Kalam. Blocks all ads

Quick fix

A "Google Ads suspended: suspicious payment activity" notice means Google doubts a payment method on the account, for example unclear card ownership, declines or chargebacks. Click Complete Payment Verification, verify every payment method it asks for, and explain who owns each one. Your appeal is reviewed once verification succeeds.

  • Check whether the account is suspended or only paused waiting for you to confirm a payment method.
  • Make sure an admin user handles the verification.
  • Confirm every payment method on the account belongs to you or you have permission to use it.
  • Look for the Complete Payment Verification panel on the right of the account.

What this error means

Google saw payment activity it couldn't trust, so it suspended the account or capped its spending. That can be outright fraud, but also ordinary-looking signals such as several new cards at once, declined payments, chargebacks or billing details that don't clearly belong to the account owner.

Google says it will suspend an account or limit spending if it detects suspicious or incorrect payment activity.

Why it happens

1Unusual card activity

Suddenly adding several new cards, declined payments, chargebacks and unclear card ownership or billing details are all signals Google lists.

How to tell if this is you: You recently added or swapped cards, had declines, or the card is in a different name from the account.

2A chargeback on a legitimate balance

Asking your bank or card company to reverse a charge for a legitimate Google Ads balance can get the account suspended.

How to tell if this is you: You or your finance team disputed a Google Ads charge with the bank.

3Unpaid balance or doubts about future payments

An unpaid balance, or concerns about future payments because of payment method problems or declines, can suspend the account.

How to tell if this is you: The billing summary shows an outstanding balance or a declined payment.

4Someone else's card or identity

Paying with stolen card numbers, or applying for monthly invoicing with someone else's identity, is treated as suspicious payment activity.

How to tell if this is you: The card or invoicing details belong to someone who hasn't authorised them.

How to fix it

Verify your payment methods

  1. Sign in as an admin and click Complete Payment Verification in the right-hand panel.
  2. Or go to Account under Policy and start the Confirm your payment method task.Admin then Policy then Account
  3. Select Verify on the payment method, then Get code, a payment or documents, whichever Google asks for.
  4. Find the code in a temporary charge from Google of no more than $1.95 USD. It can take up to 7 days to appear and is refunded within 30 days.
  5. Repeat for every payment method Google lists.
  6. Watch for verification updates from Google Payments ([email protected]).

Fix the payment problem

For: Unpaid balance or doubts about future payments, Unusual card activity, Someone else's card or identity

  1. Use only payment methods you own or have permission to use.
  2. Complete advertiser verification as well if Google asks for it.

How to appeal or request a review

If the account is suspended, you may be asked to verify your payment method within 30 days before Google processes the appeal.

  1. In your Google Ads account, select the Contact Us link in the notification at the top of the screen.
  2. Complete the appeal form that opens on the right side of the screen.
  3. Wait for the email with the outcome. Selecting Contact Us again while the appeal is processing only shows an Appeal pending status.
  4. If the appeal is rejected, you can appeal again the same way.

What to include

  • Say who owns each payment method on the account, and explain any declined payments or chargebacks.

What not to do

  • Don't ask your bank to reverse a legitimate Google Ads charge while you sort this out. A chargeback on a legitimate balance is itself a reason for suspension.

Open Google's review page

How long it takes

Google may ask you to verify the payment method, with 30 days to do it. Once verification succeeds, your appeal is sent for review, and you get an email with the outcome. Google publishes no review time beyond that.

How to stop it happening again

  • Pay only with payment methods you own or have permission to use.
  • Avoid adding several new cards at once, and keep billing details matching the account owner.
  • Raise billing questions with Google rather than filing a chargeback on a legitimate balance.

From my desk

Mismatched card and account names, repeated failed payments, or a recent change of billing details can look odd to Google. I do not guess. I review the payment profile and use Google's own suspension appeal, with genuine payment details. No new account should be opened to get round it.

When to get help

  • Verification keeps failing and you can't tell which document or detail Google rejects.
  • The account is paid by a different company or person from the one that owns it.
  • Your appeal was rejected after you completed verification.

FAQs

What is suspicious payment activity in Google Ads?

Payment activity Google can't trust: stolen cards or someone else's identity, or signals such as several new cards at once, declines, chargebacks and unclear card ownership or billing details.

Is my account suspended or just paused?

Sometimes Google only pauses the account and asks you to confirm the payment method or make a payment. In that case the account isn't suspended, and an admin can complete the challenge to unpause it.

How much is the Google Ads verification charge?

It depends on your currency but won't exceed $1.95 USD. It can take up to 7 days to appear and is refunded within 30 days.

What should I write in a suspicious payment activity appeal?

Explain who owns each payment method on the account, and the reason for any declined payments or chargebacks.

Should I file a chargeback for a charge I don't recognise?

Not for a legitimate Google Ads balance: asking your bank to reverse it can get the account suspended. If someone else used your card, take that to your bank or card issuer, and report the unauthorised activity to Google through its form.
