Google Ads Search Terms Report Missing Data: Why Queries Are Hidden

Last checked against Google's documentation. By Muhammed Abdul Kalam. Visibility

Quick fix

Google ads search terms report missing data usually isn't a fault. Google leaves out search terms without enough query activity to protect privacy, so the report only lists terms a significant number of people used. To see the hidden queries, open the Insights page and use the search terms insights card, which groups them into categories.

  • Open Search terms under Insights and reports and check the date range.
  • Add the Keyword column if you cannot see which keyword matched.
  • Open the search terms insights card on the Insights page.
  • Compare total clicks with the report to see how much is hidden.

What this error means

The search terms report shows queries that triggered your ads, but only ones with enough activity. Rare queries are left out for privacy, so the rows will not add up to your total clicks. Search terms insights counts those hidden queries inside broader categories.

Why it happens

1Privacy thresholds

Terms with too little query activity are omitted from the report.

How to tell if this is you: Report totals are lower than campaign clicks or impressions.

2Conversion lag between views

Conversions are processed differently in the report and in insights.

How to tell if this is you: Conversion numbers differ slightly between the two views.

3A column isn't switched on

The Keyword column stays hidden until you switch it on.

How to tell if this is you: You cannot see which keyword matched a search term.

4The campaign type

Search terms insights are only available for some campaign types.

How to tell if this is you: You can't find the insights card for the campaign.

How to fix it

See hidden queries as categories

For: Privacy thresholds

  1. Go to Insights within the Campaigns menu and find the search terms insights card.
  2. Use the search categories, which include terms the report does not expose.
  3. Treat low-click terms as part of the "other search terms" group.

Show the Keyword column

For: A column isn't switched on

  1. Select the columns icon, then Attributes, check Keyword and select Apply.

Allow for reporting differences

For: Conversion lag between views, The campaign type

  1. Expect small conversion differences between the report and insights.
  2. Check the campaign type: insights cover Search, Performance Max and Shopping.

How long it takes

Google doesn't publish a timeline for this.

How to stop it happening again

  • Review both the search terms report and insights, not just one.
  • Add negative keywords from the report view, not the Report editor.
  • Keep the Keyword column on so you can see how keywords match searches.

From my desk

Google hides queries with very few searches, mainly for privacy, so the report never shows everything. What matters is the share of spend on visible terms and whether there is enough to work on negatives. Missing queries are normal, not a bug.
