Google Ads Invalid Clicks: What Google Filters, What It Credits and What You Can Do
Quick fix
Google Ads invalid clicks, such as bots, accidental clicks or competitors clicking, are filtered automatically and not billed when Google catches them before your invoice. Later detections are credited as Invalid activity on a following invoice. Add the Invalid clicks column to see what was filtered before assuming you paid for it.
- Add the
Invalid clickscolumn to your campaigns table. - Look for
Invalid activityadjustments on your invoices. - Open the Invalid Activity Credit Report in Report Editor.

What this error means
Invalid clicks are clicks that don't reflect genuine interest: bots, accidental taps, fraudulent placements or people clicking to waste your budget. Google filters most of them automatically, removes them from your metrics and bill, and credits ones it finds later.
Google's traffic quality team uses automated filters, machine learning and manual reviews to detect and filter invalid traffic.
Why it happens
1Bots and automated software
Automated software generates clicks and impressions that mimic people.
How to tell if this is you: Clicks spike with no matching sessions or engagement on your site.
2Accidental clicks and fraudulent placements
Ads placed too close to navigation buttons, clickjacking and ad stacking.
How to tell if this is you: Display or app placements send clicks that leave immediately.
3People clicking without interest
Competitors clicking to raise your spend, or publishers paying people to click.
How to tell if this is you: Repeated clicks with no enquiries, often at the same times.
How to fix it
- Open your campaigns, click the
Columnsicon and search forInvalid clicks. - Look for
Invalid activityadjustments on your invoices. - Open the Invalid Activity Credit Report in Report Editor for credited metrics.
- Remember that billed cost already reflects adjustments for invalid activity.
How long it takes
Invalid traffic Google catches before the billing cycle ends is never billed. Traffic detected after the cycle ends is credited automatically in the next billing cycle, when appropriate and possible.
How to stop it happening again
- Watch the Invalid clicks column alongside clicks.
- Review where display ads appear, since poor placements cause accidental clicks.
- Read a rise in invalid clicks as filtering at work, not necessarily a loss.
From my desk
Click fraud is not my first assumption. I look at placements, search partners and campaign types for weak traffic, and at the Invalid clicks column to see what Google filtered and credited. Poor targeting or a weak page often explains results better than fraud.

When to get help
- Clicks rise sharply with no matching visits or enquiries and nothing appears as invalid.
- You need to separate genuine low-quality traffic from invalid clicks across many placements.

Do I pay for invalid clicks?
Not for those Google detects before billing. Ones found later are credited as Invalid activity on a following invoice, when appropriate and possible.
Can competitors click my ads to waste my budget?
Google lists competitors manually clicking to increase your spend as one type of invalid activity it works to detect.
Where can I see invalid clicks?
Add the Invalid clicks column to your campaigns table, and check the Invalid Activity Credit Report in Report Editor.
Why did my invalid clicks go up?
Google says an increase means its defences are actively protecting your budget.
When are invalid click credits applied?
Traffic found after a billing cycle ends is credited automatically in the next billing cycle.
