Google Ads Not Showing? 8 Causes and How to Fix Each One

Last checked against Google's documentation. By Muhammed Abdul Kalam. Visibility

Quick fix

Google Ads not showing usually has a cause inside the account. Check in this order: account and billing status, whether the campaign, ad group and ads are enabled and approved, then budget, bids and targeting. Use the Ad preview and diagnosis tool to test a keyword instead of searching for your own ad.

  • Check the account has no suspension, security review or billing hold.
  • Check the campaign, ad group and ad are not Paused or Removed.
  • Check the ads and assets are approved, not disapproved or under review.
  • Test a keyword in the Ad preview and diagnosis tool.

What this error means

Ads that don't show are almost always blocked by something in the account rather than a fault at Google: an account or billing problem, a paused or disapproved ad, a budget or bid too low to win auctions, targeting too narrow, or keywords with too little search volume.

Google's own troubleshooting starts with account issues: a suspended account, a security review or a billing issue stops ads until it's resolved.

Why it happens

1An account, security or billing hold

A suspension, a security review or a billing issue such as a billing hold or missing payment method stops ads entirely. A security review can mean zero impressions or a temporary daily spending limit.

How to tell if this is you: A notification sits at the top of the account, or the billing summary shows a problem.

2Something is paused, removed or disapproved

An enabled campaign can still have paused or removed ad groups, ads or assets, or ads that are disapproved or under review.

How to tell if this is you: The Status column shows anything other than Eligible.

3The budget is too low

With a low budget, ads serve less often so the campaign stays within its spending limit.

How to tell if this is you: The campaign status says Limited by budget.

4Bids are too low, or Ad Rank is low

Very low bids mean the campaign isn't likely to win many auctions. Low Ad Rank can also come from low Quality Score.

How to tell if this is you: Search Lost IS (rank) is high, or keywords show a below first page bid status.

5The bid strategy isn't ready

A bid strategy marked Inactive, Learning, Limited or Misconfigured can stop ads running well. Conversion bidding without enough conversion data, or with broken tracking, limits serving.

How to tell if this is you: The bid strategy status column shows one of those statuses.

6Targeting is too narrow

Overly restrictive location or audience targeting, and negative keywords that block relevant searches, limit reach.

How to tell if this is you: You target a small area, use 'Presence' only, or have audiences set to Targeting on a new search campaign.

7Keywords have low search volume

Keywords with very little search history don't trigger ads.

How to tell if this is you: Keywords show the Low search volume status.

8Your own campaigns compete with each other

Several campaigns or ad groups with similar keywords or targeting can enter the same auctions.

How to tell if this is you: The same keyword appears in more than one campaign or ad group.

How to fix it

Diagnose before changing anything

  1. Use the Ad preview and diagnosis tool for a specific keyword rather than searching for your own ad. It simulates one search, so also check real impressions and clicks.
  2. Read the diagnostic insights on the campaign for issues and recommended fixes.
  3. If an ad seems missing from the Google Ads interface itself, clear your browser cache and cookies or use an incognito window.

Clear account and status problems

For: An account, security or billing hold, Something is paused, removed or disapproved

  1. Resolve any suspension, security review or billing issue first. Ads will not run until the account has valid billing information.
  2. If a security review is the cause, review the users with administrative access and make sure all are authorised.
  3. Enable paused ad groups and ads, and fix disapproved assets.

Fix budget, bids and bid strategy

For: The budget is too low, Bids are too low, or Ad Rank is low, The bid strategy isn't ready

  1. If the campaign is limited by budget, raise the budget or check the budget simulator.
  2. Raise bids that are too low to win auctions, and improve Quality Score to lift Ad Rank.
  3. Check the bid strategy status and fix conversion tracking if the strategy optimises for conversions.

Widen targeting and keywords

For: Targeting is too narrow, Keywords have low search volume, Your own campaigns compete with each other

  1. Review negative keyword lists for anything blocking relevant searches.
  2. Consider broadening location options from Presence to Presence or Interest.
  3. On new search campaigns, set audiences to Observation instead of Targeting.
  4. Replace keywords marked Low search volume.

How long it takes

Google's ad review page puts most reviews at one business day. Its Search troubleshooting guide adds that new accounts and image or video formats can take up to 5 business days. Automated security reviews can't be expedited.

How to stop it happening again

  • Add a backup of valid billing information so a billing issue never stops the account.
  • Check the status column after every change to ads or assets.
  • Keep targeting broad enough for your budget, and review negative keywords regularly.
  • Avoid putting the same keywords in several campaigns.

From my desk

Campaign and ad status first, then billing and approvals. Paused items, disapproved ads, a payment problem or a bid and budget that are too low are the usual candidates. I read the status columns before touching any targeting.

When to get help

  • You've worked through the causes and the campaign still won't spend or show, and you can't see why.
  • The campaign is running during a launch or sale and every day without traffic costs real money.
  • The account has several campaigns competing for the same searches and the setup needs untangling.

FAQs

Why are my Google Ads not showing when the campaign is enabled?

An enabled campaign can still have paused, removed or disapproved ad groups, ads or assets. Check the status of each, then the budget, bids and targeting.

Why can't I see my own ad when I search on Google?

Searching for your own ad is not a reliable test. Use the Ad preview and diagnosis tool, and check real impressions and clicks in the account.

How long before new Google Ads start showing?

Google reviews most ads within one business day. New accounts and image or video ads can take up to 5 business days, and campaigns on automated bidding may fluctuate while they learn.

Can a security review stop my ads?

Yes. An account security review can mean zero impressions or a temporary daily spending limit, and these automated reviews can't be expedited.

Do low search volume keywords stop my ads?

Those keywords don't trigger ads while they have the Low search volume status. Replace or broaden them.
