Quick fix

Facebook lead ads fake leads can be cut with two settings. Switch the instant form from More volume to Higher intent, which adds a review screen, and turn on SMS verification so people must confirm their mobile number with a one-time passcode. Meta says this filters out fake leads such as spam bots.

  • Change the form type to Higher intent.
  • Make phone number a required contact field.
  • Tick Require SMS verification to submit form.
  • Expect fewer leads, and no leads from landline numbers.

What this error means

The default More volume form is built to make submitting quick and easy on mobile, which also makes careless or fake submissions easy. Higher intent forms and SMS verification add friction that filters out marginally interested people and spam bots.

Why it happens

1The form is set to More volume

The default form type is designed to generate a larger number of leads.

How to tell if this is you: Form type shows More volume.

2No phone verification

Without SMS verification, unverified or fake numbers get through.

How to tell if this is you: Leads arrive with numbers that never connect.

How to fix it

Switch to Higher intent

For: The form is set to More volume

  1. In the instant form editor, go to Form type and choose Higher intent.
  2. Note it only delivers to Facebook and Instagram feeds on mobile.

Turn on SMS verification

For: No phone verification

  1. Add phone number as a required contact field. A work phone number field does not enable verification.
  2. Check Require SMS verification to submit form.

How long it takes

Meta doesn't publish a timeline for this.

How to stop it happening again

  • Start new lead campaigns on Higher intent forms when every lead needs follow-up.
  • Keep SMS verification on wherever it is available.

From my desk

Adding a little friction tends to help, like a higher intent form with a review step or a question real buyers answer easily. I also look at placements, since some bring lower quality submissions. Then I ask the client which leads were good and tune from there.
