Facebook Advanced Matching Not Working: Causes and Fixes

Last checked against Meta's documentation. By Muhammed Abdul Kalam. Data loss

Quick fix

Facebook advanced matching not working is usually a limit of the automatic version. It doesn't work when the pixel sits in an iframe, with an IMG pixel, or for businesses in restricted industries, and it can't identify people who never fill in a form or log in. Use manual advanced matching in those cases.

  • Check the automatic toggle is on in the pixel Settings.
  • Check the pixel is not in an iframe and is not an IMG pixel.
  • Check whether Events Manager says your business is a restricted vertical.
  • Make sure forms or logins exist where the pixel loads.

What this error means

Advanced matching sends hashed customer details such as email with pixel events to help match conversions to people. The automatic version needs no code but has limits, and the manual version needs a developer but works in more situations.

Why it happens

1Pixel in an iframe

Automatic matching does not work in an iframe.

How to tell if this is you: The pixel loads inside a frame.

2IMG pixel

Automatic matching does not work with an IMG pixel.

How to tell if this is you: The pixel is an image tag.

3Restricted vertical

Some industries cannot use automatic matching.

How to tell if this is you: Events Manager says you cannot use it.

4No form field or login to read

Automatic matching only learns who someone is when they act.

How to tell if this is you: No relevant form fields where the pixel loads.

5Not enough time yet

Results can take up to 48 hours.

How to tell if this is you: You enabled it today.

How to fix it

Use manual advanced matching

For: Pixel in an iframe, IMG pixel, Restricted vertical, No form field or login to read

  1. Set up advanced matching manually for these cases.
  2. Use both manual and automatic where possible.

Set up automatic matching well

For: No form field or login to read, Not enough time yet

  1. Turn the automatic toggle on in the pixel Settings.
  2. Share at least email and phone number.
  3. Place the pixel on pages where people enter details.

How long it takes

Meta says it may take up to 48 hours after setup before you see results in Events Manager.

How to stop it happening again

  • Use both manual and automatic advanced matching where you can.
  • Check the site has relevant form fields.
  • Choose automatic matching if no developer is available.

From my desk

I start with automatic because it takes minutes and needs no developer. I switch to manual when the pixel sits in an iframe, when the site uses an image pixel, or when the business is in a restricted industry. On sites where people stay logged in, manual is also the better bet, so I usually run both together.
