What this error means
Meta couldn't charge your payment method, so it paused your ads and disabled the ad account until the amount due is paid. You won't be charged further until then, and Billing & payments may say the account is unsettled.
Why it happens
1The card or method itself
The method may not be supported in your country, may not be enabled for online transactions, or may have an invalid expiry date or no CVV.
How to tell if this is you: The failed payment message names the card, expiry or verification.
2Declined by the bank
Your bank declined the charge, for example for insufficient funds.
How to tell if this is you: The message says the charge was declined by your financial institution.
3Card limit lower than the threshold
Some cards cap the amount of a single transaction.
How to tell if this is you: Small charges succeed but charges at your payment threshold fail.
4OTP not received
The payment method must be linked to a phone you can access for one-time passwords.
How to tell if this is you: You were asked for an OTP and did not get it.
How to fix it
Pay the balance
- Go to Billing & payments and select the ad account.
- Click
Payment methods, thenPay now. - Pick a saved payment method, or add a different one.
- If it keeps failing, try again later with a different card.
Fix the card
For: The card or method itself, Declined by the bank, OTP not received
- Make sure the method is supported in your country and enabled for online transactions.
- If your bank declined the charge, ask the bank why. Ask Meta support about anything on Meta's side.
Match the threshold to your card
For: Card limit lower than the threshold
- Lower your payment threshold to match a per-transaction limit on your card.
How long it takes
Meta doesn't give a time for reinstatement after a failed payment. Once you pay, it resumes active or scheduled ads. If ads stay paused, you may have hit the daily spending limit, which resets at 12:00 AM in the ad account's time zone.
How to stop it happening again
- Add a backup payment method.
- Keep the card funded, especially near your monthly bill date.
- Don't spread one card across too many ad accounts: typically up to 10 are allowed.
From my desk
A payment method that belongs to the business, has enough limit for the budget and allows recurring international charges. A backup method helps too. Banks sometimes decline these charges, so the client may need to approve them with the bank first.
