Feed photo (any shape) Recommended

min 1080 px wide

Instagram shares feed photos at up to this width; larger uploads are scaled down.

Kalam's adviceExport at the full width rather than a phone screenshot. Instagram scales big files down cleanly; it can't add detail to a small one.

Anything taller is cropped to fit the supported range.

Kalam's adviceDesign feed posts in portrait. A taller frame takes more of the screen as people scroll, and it still works when you crop it square for the grid.

Kalam's adviceShoot vertical and keep the subject in the middle of the frame. The same video then works as a Reel, a Story and a Reels ad without a recut.

Instagram says the cover can't be edited after the reel is uploaded.

Kalam's advicePut the title inside the middle of the cover. The profile grid shows a cropped version, so text near the top and bottom edges gets cut.

Kalam's adviceWrite the primary text so the first line carries the offer. On a phone, most people never tap to read the rest.

Kalam's adviceKeep the headline and logo inside the safe area. The bottom band is where the call to action sits, and anything you put there gets covered.

Instagram sizes: FAQs

What size is an Instagram post?

Upload photos at least 1080 pixels wide. Instagram keeps any shape between 1.91:1 landscape and 3:4 portrait, so the tallest feed photo is 1080 x 1440 px (1080 by 1440 pixels). Anything outside that range is cropped to fit.

What is the best aspect ratio for Instagram feed posts?

Instagram supports photos from 1.91:1 to 3:4. Portrait at 3:4 (1080 x 1440 px) is the tallest it keeps, and for feed image ads Meta recommends 4:5 at 1440 x 1800 px.

What size is an Instagram Reel?

Instagram accepts reels up to a 9:16 ratio, at a minimum resolution of 720 pixels and at least 30 frames per second. For Reels ads, Meta recommends 1440 x 2560 px.

What is the Instagram Reel cover size?

Instagram recommends 420 x 654 px, a 1:1.55 ratio. It also says you can't edit the cover once the reel is uploaded, so set it before you post.

How many photos can you put in an Instagram carousel?

Up to 20 photos and videos in one post. A carousel ad works differently: it takes 2 to 10 cards.

What size should Instagram Story ads be?

Meta recommends 9:16 at 1440 x 2560 px, and suggests keeping roughly 14% at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% on each side free of text and logos.
