Open Graph Image Size for Link Previews

Last checked against Open Graph and link previews's own documentation. By Muhammed Abdul Kalam · How we verify

Use a 1.91:1 image of at least 1200 x 630 px for og:image. That is Facebook's recommendation and clears LinkedIn's minimum of 1200 x 627 px. Keep the file under 5 MB so it works on LinkedIn too; Facebook allows up to 8 MB and shows anything below 600 x 315 px much smaller.

Kalam's adviceMake one og:image per page rather than one for the whole site. A preview that shows the actual article or product earns far more clicks than a logo on a coloured background.

Smaller images still show, but much smaller.

Kalam's adviceCheck every new page in a link preview before sharing it. Platforms cache the first image they find, and an old or missing image can stick for days.

Kalam's adviceKeep text inside the middle of the image. Different apps crop link previews slightly differently, and the edges are the first thing to go.

Open Graph and link previews sizes: FAQs

What size should an og:image be?

Facebook recommends at least 1200 x 630 px (1200 by 630 pixels), close to 1.91:1, under 8 MB. LinkedIn requires at least 1200 x 627 px at 1.91:1, up to 5 MB, so 1200 x 630 px works for both.

What is the minimum og:image size?

Facebook accepts images down to 200 x 200 px, but below 600 x 315 px link posts show a much smaller image. LinkedIn's minimum is 1200 x 627 px.

What aspect ratio is best for link previews?

1.91:1. Facebook says images close to 1.91:1 display in full without cropping, and LinkedIn recommends the same ratio.

What is the maximum og:image file size?

8 MB for Facebook and 5 MB for LinkedIn. Stay under 5 MB if the page will be shared on both.

What size is the X (Twitter) card image?

X's current developer docs no longer publish a card image size; the old summary card pages now redirect. A 1.91:1 image at 1200 x 630 px meets Facebook's recommendation and LinkedIn's minimum.

What size do WhatsApp and Slack use for link previews?

Neither publishes an image size in official documentation we could check. A 1.91:1 image at 1200 x 630 px meets every published spec on this page.
