Smart Bidding

Smart Bidding is Google's suite of automated bid strategies that use machine learning to optimise for conversions or conversion value at the moment of each auction.

Smart Bidding is Google Ads’ automated bidding technology that adjusts bids in real time at the moment of each auction, using signals that no human could process at that speed or scale.

What Smart Bidding Means in Marketing

Every Google search auction is different. The person searching, the device they’re using, the time of day, their location, their recent search history, and dozens of other signals all affect how likely that click is to convert. Manual bidding sets one bid for a keyword and ignores everything else. Smart Bidding sets a unique bid for every single auction.

The strategies within Smart Bidding include Target CPA (optimise toward a cost per conversion), Target ROAS (optimise toward a revenue-to-spend ratio), Maximise Conversions (spend the budget and get as many conversions as possible), and Maximise Conversion Value (spend the budget and maximise total revenue).

The choice between them depends on what you have more of: a fixed budget or a target efficiency. Maximise Conversions suits a fixed budget when you want volume. Target ROAS suits a business with clear revenue-per-conversion data and a need to stay above a profitability threshold.

How Smart Bidding Works

At the moment a user’s search triggers your ad to compete, Google’s auction system evaluates that user and context against your campaign’s historical conversion data. It predicts the probability and value of a conversion from that specific click and sets a bid accordingly.

The algorithm needs conversion data as training material. Sparse data means imprecise predictions. This is why campaigns with fewer than thirty conversions per month rarely benefit from Target CPA or Target ROAS strategies: the model doesn’t have enough examples to learn from.

The learning phase, the period after a significant change where the algorithm is recalibrating, typically runs for one to two weeks and is often accompanied by volatile performance. Frequent changes reset it, which is one reason disciplined campaign structure matters.

Smart Bidding Example

A travel brand switches a high-volume search campaign from manual CPC to Target ROAS after reaching 200 monthly conversions. In the first two weeks, CPC and conversion volume fluctuate. By week four, the campaign is achieving the ROAS target with higher conversion volume than the manual period at the same budget, because the algorithm is now filtering for high-intent signals the manual bids couldn’t differentiate.

Why Smart Bidding Matters for Marketers

At scale, no manual bidding strategy can compete with the signal volume Smart Bidding processes. But scale is the key word. Smart Bidding requires conversion data to function well. Treat it as a tool that amplifies signal, not a button that replaces judgment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Smart Bidding and manual CPC?

Manual CPC lets you set a fixed maximum bid per click. Smart Bidding sets a different bid for every single auction based on dozens of signals: device, location, time of day, search query, audience membership, browser and more. Manual bidding can't process that volume of signals. Smart Bidding can, provided it has enough conversion data to work with.

How much conversion data does Smart Bidding need?

Google recommends at least 30 conversions in the past 30 days as a starting point, and more for Target ROAS strategies. Below that threshold, the algorithm lacks enough signal to bid effectively. Campaigns with very few weekly conversions are often better served by maximise clicks or manual CPC until volume builds.

Why does Smart Bidding sometimes hurt performance?

Usually because of one of three things: insufficient conversion data, poorly defined conversion actions (like tracking page views as conversions), or sudden budget changes that push the campaign back into a learning phase. Smart Bidding is a powerful tool that amplifies both your setup and your mistakes.
