First-Click Attribution
First-click attribution assigns all conversion credit to the first channel a customer encountered, treating every subsequent touchpoint as irrelevant to the sale.
First-click attribution is a measurement model that gives all conversion credit to the first marketing channel or touchpoint a customer encountered at the start of their purchase journey, ignoring every subsequent interaction.
What First-Click Attribution Means in Marketing
Where last-click attribution rewards the channel that closed the deal, first-click attribution rewards the channel that opened the relationship. If someone clicked a YouTube pre-roll ad, then visited three times via organic search, then converted through a retargeting ad, first-click attributes the full conversion to YouTube.
The appeal is clear: first-click gives credit to discovery channels that genuinely introduce new audiences to a brand. In organisations where top-of-funnel spend is constantly under pressure because it’s hard to attribute, first-click attribution can demonstrate the role those channels play.
The limitation is equally clear: attributing the entire conversion to the first touchpoint ignores everything that happened between discovery and purchase, including the content, the product pages, the reviews, the retargeting and the trust-building that moved someone from first hearing about a brand to actually buying from it.
How First-Click Attribution Works
The model looks at the first recorded session source for a converting user and assigns the conversion there. Many platforms have a limited attribution window: if the converting session happens more than 90 days after the first click, some tools won’t look that far back.
The output is a view of conversion by first touch: which channel or campaign brought this person into the funnel for the first time. This is useful for understanding discovery patterns, less useful for understanding what worked overall.
First-Click Attribution Example
A consumer brand finds that under first-click attribution, influencer marketing and paid social take the largest share of conversion credit. Under last-click attribution, those same channels appear to generate almost nothing, with branded search and direct traffic taking most of the credit. Neither model is right. The actual picture requires seeing the full path: influencer drove discovery, branded search captured the intent that discovery created.
Why First-Click Attribution Matters for Marketers
First-click attribution’s value is diagnostic. It answers the question: where did these customers come from at the very beginning? That question matters when you’re trying to understand awareness and discovery. It stops mattering when you’re trying to evaluate the total effectiveness of your marketing programme, because one touchpoint out of many is rarely the complete explanation. Use it alongside last-click and multi-touch data, never in isolation.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does first-click attribution make sense?
When your primary question is about discovery: which channels are bringing new customers into the funnel for the first time? If you're scaling a business and trying to find more people who don't yet know you exist, first-click attribution helps you understand what's generating initial awareness. It's the wrong model for evaluating closing efficiency.
How is first-click different from last-click attribution?
They're opposite ends of the same flawed logic. [Last-click attribution](/marketing-glossary/last-click-attribution/) credits the final touchpoint and rewards capture channels. First-click credits the initial touchpoint and rewards discovery channels. Both ignore the middle of the customer journey and both distort budget decisions in predictable ways.
Does any major platform use first-click as a default?
Some platforms offer it as a selectable model rather than a default. Google Analytics has historically defaulted to last-click. First-click attribution tends to be used by marketers who want to make the case for top-of-funnel investment, because it shows those channels in a more favourable light than last-click does.
