Dynamic Product Ads (DPA)
Dynamic product ads automatically show each viewer the products they browsed or added to cart, using a product catalogue to personalise the creative in real time.
Dynamic product ads pull items from your product catalogue and show each shopper the exact products they have already shown interest in, assembled automatically without manual creative for every product.
What Dynamic Product Ads Means in Marketing
If you run an online store with hundreds or thousands of products, building individual ad creatives for each one is not practical. Dynamic product ads solve that. You upload your catalogue, install tracking on your site, and the platform handles the rest: when a user browses your site and then sees one of your ads, the ad shows them the product they looked at, at the price currently in your catalogue, with a link back to that product page.
The personalisation is automatic. The ad for a user who browsed running shoes shows running shoes. The ad for a user who looked at laptop bags shows laptop bags. One campaign setup covers your entire catalogue.
This is the format that made retargeting practical at scale for e-commerce. Without it, retargeting required either generic brand ads or a manually assembled creative for every product variant.
How Dynamic Product Ads Works
Setup requires three components:
-
Product catalogue feed. A structured file (XML, CSV or via a platform integration) containing each product’s ID, title, description, price, image URL, category and availability. The feed updates regularly so prices and stock levels stay accurate in the ads.
-
Pixel or SDK tracking. The Meta Pixel or equivalent must fire specific events with product IDs: ViewContent, AddToCart, Purchase. These events tell the platform which products each user has interacted with and match them to catalogue entries.
-
Campaign with catalogue sales objective. The campaign is pointed at your catalogue and configured for retargeting (warm audiences who interacted with your site) or prospecting (cold audiences the platform selects based on predicted interest).
The platform assembles the ad dynamically at auction time using the product data from your catalogue and the user’s event history.
Dynamic Product Ads Example
A fashion retailer with 3,000 products runs a retargeting DPA campaign targeting visitors who viewed a product in the last 14 days but did not purchase. When one of those visitors opens Instagram, they see the exact jacket they browsed, at the current price, with an option to complete their purchase. The conversion rate on this campaign significantly outperforms the brand’s standard prospecting creative, because the audience is already past the awareness stage and the ad shows them something they have already decided they want.
Why Dynamic Product Ads Matters for Marketers
DPA campaigns are among the most consistently profitable formats in e-commerce advertising because they target warm audiences with relevant products at the moment of highest intent. The personalisation, which would be prohibitively expensive to produce manually, happens automatically from your catalogue.
The quality of your catalogue feed is the limiting factor. Outdated prices, broken image URLs and missing product descriptions degrade the ad quality without triggering any obvious error. Catalogue maintenance is not glamorous, but it directly affects DPA performance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do dynamic product ads work technically?
You connect your product catalogue to the ad platform, either through a direct feed URL or an integration with your e-commerce platform. The catalogue contains each product's ID, name, description, price, image URL and link. The platform's pixel or SDK tracks which product IDs each user viewed on your site. When that user is served an ad, the platform pulls the relevant product data from the catalogue and assembles the ad dynamically, in real time.
What is the difference between retargeting DPA and prospecting DPA?
Retargeting DPA shows products to people who already visited your site and viewed or interacted with those specific items. They are high-intent and typically show strong ROAS because the audience is warm. Prospecting DPA, sometimes called broad audience DPA, shows catalogue products to people who have not visited your site but match your targeting criteria. The platform chooses which products to show based on what it predicts will interest them.
Do you need separate creative for dynamic product ads?
Not for the product images, which come from the catalogue automatically. But you do control the frame around the product: the overlay text, the background colour, the call to action and the ad copy in the description field. These elements should be tested like any other creative. Poor frame design can undermine a strong product image. Good frame design can lift click-through rate significantly without touching the product catalogue.
