How to Complete Postcard Verification in India

Postcard verification is the most common method for Indian businesses. Here's how to do it correctly the first time to avoid delays.

1

Confirm your address is complete

Before requesting the postcard, verify your address includes: building name or number, street name, area/locality, city, state, and PIN code. An incomplete address is the most common reason postcards fail to arrive.

2

Request the postcard from your dashboard

In your GBP dashboard, click "Verify now" and choose "By postcard" if it is the available option. Google will show you the address it will send to. Confirm it looks correct, then click "Send postcard."

3

Do not edit your address while waiting

If you change your business address after requesting the postcard, the code on the postcard will be invalid. Wait until the postcard arrives before making any address changes.

4

Watch for the postcard (2 to 4 weeks)

The postcard arrives in a plain white envelope from Google, usually addressed to "Google LLC." It contains a 5-digit verification code. If you have a reception area or post room, alert them to watch for it.

5

Enter the code within 30 days of sending

The code is valid for 30 days from the date it was sent, not from when you receive it. Log into your GBP dashboard, go to "Verify now," enter the code, and click "Submit."

Postcard Not Arriving?

Check that your business address on GBP is 100% accurate including PIN code
Make sure someone is available to receive mail at the address
Check if your building has a common mail area that might hold it
Request a new postcard after 30 days if the first does not arrive
Try adding the building/floor number to the address for better deliverability
Contact Google support if three consecutive postcards fail to arrive

How to Record a Strong Verification Video

If video verification is required, Google needs to see three things in one continuous recording with no cuts.

Start outside: walk from the street to your signage, showing the building address
Show the business name on signage clearly
Walk inside without stopping the recording
Show the interior in a way that demonstrates active business operations
Show equipment, branded materials, or products that confirm your business type
Show a document with your business name and address (license, certificate)
Record in good lighting and keep the video under 5 minutes

Service-area businesses: verify without showing your home address

If you run a service-area business (you travel to clients rather than having them visit you), you can still verify using your home or office address. After verification, you toggle the address visibility to "hidden" in your GBP dashboard. Only your service area cities will be visible to the public. Google uses the address for verification purposes only and does not publish it.

This is important because using a fake or non-existent address to avoid revealing your home address is a policy violation that can lead to suspension. The correct path is to verify with a real address and then hide it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is verification required for Google Business Profile?
Verification confirms that you are the legitimate owner or authorized representative of the business at the stated location. It protects businesses from unauthorized edits, prevents fraudulent listings, and ensures that only real, operating businesses appear in local search results. Verified listings also receive the full suite of GBP features and carry more ranking weight than unverified ones.
How long does GBP postcard verification take in India?
Google estimates postcard delivery within 5 to 7 business days internationally, but in India actual delivery commonly takes 2 to 4 weeks. If your postcard has not arrived after 30 days, you can request a new one from your GBP dashboard. Make sure your address is complete and accurate, including the pin code, building name, and floor number if applicable.
Can I edit my GBP listing before it is verified?
Yes, you can make edits to an unverified listing, but they may not appear in Google Search and Maps until the listing is verified. Verification is required before your optimized profile takes full effect in local search rankings. Some edits made before verification may also be subject to a review period after verification is complete.
What should I do if my postcard verification code expired?
Verification codes on postcards are valid for 30 days from the date they were sent, not from when you receive them. If the code has expired, log into your GBP dashboard, navigate to the verification section, and request a new postcard. Each new request resets the 30-day window. If you keep missing the window, consider switching to a different verification method if one becomes available for your account.
What is video verification and how does it work?
Video verification is a newer method Google uses for businesses that cannot verify via phone, email, or postcard. You record a continuous video showing the exterior of your business location (including street signage), the interior with evidence of business operations, and proof of your ownership (business license, branded materials, equipment). The video is reviewed by Google's team manually and typically takes 3 to 5 business days.
Can a service-area business get verified without a physical address?
Yes. Service-area businesses (SABs) like plumbers, electricians, and delivery services can verify using a home or office address that is then hidden from the public profile. Google sends the verification postcard or uses phone verification to that address, but the address will not be displayed to customers on Maps. You can then set your service area to the cities or regions you serve.
